1. Information We Collect and Process
MyGuardian is a conduit to help you document incidents and notify your contacts using your own Google account. We collect very limited data on our servers; most of your data is processed and stored directly within your personal Google account.
A. Information We Require Access To (Processed on Your Device)
To use the app, you must authenticate using your Google Account and grant the following permissions:
- Google Account (Login): We use Google's OAuth service to log you in. We receive your basic profile information (name, email, profile picture) to identify your account.
- Camera & Microphone: Required to capture video and audio during an incident recording via Google Meet.
- Precise Geolocation (GPS): Required to 1) Provide you with state-specific legal information (e.g., recording consent laws) and 2) Embed verifiable location metadata into your incident report.
- Phone & Google Contacts: We require access to your device and Google contacts to allow you to select your emergency contacts. MyGuardian does not upload or store your entire contact list on our servers.
- Google Meet & Google Drive: We require permission to 1) Initiate Google Meet meetings on your behalf and 2) Save the resulting recordings and summaries directly to your personal Google Drive.
B. Information Processed & Stored in Your Google Account (Not on Our Servers)
MyGuardian does not store a copy of the following incident data. This data is created and stored directly in your personal Google account, which you control.
- Video and Audio Recordings: Incident recordings are created using Google Meet and are saved directly to your Google Drive.
- Meeting Transcripts & AI Summaries: Google Meet may generate a transcript of your recording. This transcript may be processed by Google's AI (Gemini) to create a summary of the incident, which is also stored in your Google Drive.
C. Information We Collect and Store on MyGuardian Servers
We collect the following limited information on our servers to operate the Service:
- Your Selected Contacts: The specific contacts (name, phone number, or email) you designate for emergency alerts.
- Incident Data: We generate an incident report that includes the type of event you triggered (e..g., "Traffic Stop"), the time, and your location.
- Incident URL: We generate a unique, shareable URL for your incident. This URL links to your incident data and the AI-generated summary (which is pulled from your Google Drive).
- AI Chatbot Information: We collect the queries you submit to our AI chatbot (which references ACLU "Know Your Rights" documentation) to provide you with information and to train and improve our AI models.
- Usage and Device Information: Standard technical information, such as your device type, operating system, and app crash logs, to maintain and improve the app's stability.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your information for the following specific purposes:
- To Provide the Core Service: To authenticate your account, initiate Google Meet recordings on your behalf, save those recordings to your Google Drive, and send alerts and incident links to your designated contacts at your direction.
- To Provide Legal Information: To use your location to present relevant legal information from ACLU guidelines.
- To Connect You with Support: If you use the "Engage Lawyer" feature, we will share your live Google Meet link with a legal or community support representative to allow them to join the call.
- To Improve Our Service: To analyze usage, fix bugs, and improve the accuracy of our AI chatbot and summary features.
- To Comply with Legal Obligations: To respond to valid legal requests as detailed in Section 3.
3. How We Share Your Information
Your privacy and the security of your data are critical. We do not sell your personal data. We share your information only in the following limited circumstances:
Your Emergency Contacts
When you trigger an alert, we will automatically send your incident status, live location, the Google Meet link, and the post-incident URL (which contains the AI summary) to your designated contacts.
The app's core functionality requires processing data through Google services. By using MyGuardian, you are directing us to share data with the following services on your behalf:
- Google Login (OAuth): To verify your identity.
- Google Drive: To store your recordings and summaries.
- Google Meet: To conduct and record the incident.
- Google Translation: To provide translation services during the Meet, if enabled.
- Google AI (Gemini): To transcribe and summarize the incident.
Legal/Community Support
As described above, if you choose to "Engage Lawyer," your live Google Meet link will be shared with that third party.
Cloud Service Providers
We use third-party cloud hosting services to host our app's backend, manage your incident URLs, and dispatch notifications. These providers are bound by strict confidentiality and security obligations and do not have access to your Google Drive or the content of your recordings.
Legal and Law Enforcement Requests
- Regarding Your Recordings: MyGuardian does not store your video, audio, or transcripts. This data is stored in your personal Google Drive. Law enforcement must seek access to that data directly from you or from Google, subject to Google's policies and procedures.
- Regarding Your Incident Data: We may be compelled to disclose the limited data we do store (such as your selected contacts, incident type, time, and location) if we receive a valid, binding legal request, such as a subpoena, court order, or search warrant. Our policy is to notify you of any such request unless we are legally prohibited from doing so.
Anonymized Data
We may share aggregated, anonymized, or de-identified data (which cannot be used to identify you) for research purposes or to improve our AI.
4. Data Security and Storage
- Data Stored on Your Google Account: The security of your recordings, transcripts, and summaries is managed by Google. This data is stored in your Google Drive and is protected by Google's security infrastructure and encryption-at-rest protocols. You control access, sharing, and deletion of this data.
- Data Stored on MyGuardian's Servers: We protect the limited incident data and contact information we store on our servers using industry-standard security measures, including encryption in transit and at rest.
5. Your Rights and Choices
You have control over your information:
Device Permissions
You can control the app's access to your Camera, Microphone, Location, Contacts, and Google Account at any time through your device's operating system settings. Please note that disabling these permissions will prevent the app's core features from functioning.
Data Access and Deletion
- Your Recordings & Summaries: You can access, manage, share, and delete your recordings and summaries at any time directly from your personal Google Drive.
- Your MyGuardian Account: You may request deletion of your MyGuardian account by contacting us at [Support Email]. This will delete your account and incident history from our servers. This action will not automatically delete the recordings or summaries stored in your Google Drive.
6. Children's Privacy
Our Service is not directed to individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have, we will take steps to delete such information.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes by posting the new policy on our website or by notifying you through the app.
